धूमावती
Dasha Mahavidya
Dhumavati is the seventh Mahavidya — 'the smoky one'. She is the widow goddess — alone, inauspicious in the worldly sense, yet supremely liberated. She represents the wisdom of acceptance, the acknowledgement of loss, and the understanding that all worldly attachments eventually dissolve. She is invoked in situations of loss, grief, and apparent misfortune — which she transforms into spiritual insight. Dhumavati is the only Mahavidya who is widowed and ugly — yet her devotees consider her the mother of uncanny liberation.
Old, ugly widow with white hair, sharp teeth, hollow cheeks, wearing dirty white cloth. Seated on a horseless chariot with a crow banner. Holds a winnowing basket. Always accompanied by smoke.
