Bengali Durga Puja begins with Bilva Nimantran and Kalparambha on Shashti. The clay idol of Durga is unveiled (Bodhon), marking her arrival with her children Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesha, and Kartikeya at her parental home.
Dedicated to Goddess Mahagauri / Maha Durga
Bathe before sunrise and wear new or red clothes. Clean the puja pandal or room. The goddess has already been installed and worshipped on Sashti and Saptami — today is the peak day of Durga Puja.
Sit before the goddess and take Sankalp for Maha Ashtami Puja. Dedicate the puja to the welfare of the family, community, and the entire world.
Worship Lord Ganesha with durva, red flowers, and modak before proceeding to the main puja.
Perform a symbolic Mahasnan of the goddess with nine waters — ordinary water, milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugarcane juice, coconut water, Gangajal, and scented water. Use a conch shell to pour each over a small Durga Yantra or the reflection mirror before the idol.
Perform the sixteen upacharas for the goddess — Asana, Padya, Arghya, Achamaniya, Snana, Vastra, Ornaments, Chandan, Akshat, Pushpa (108 red hibiscus), Dhupa, Deepa, Naivedya, Tambula, Pradakshina, Namaskar.
The central ritual of Maha Ashtami. Devotees, bathed and fasting, gather before the goddess with flowers in their hands. The priest recites three rounds of mantras and each round culminates in the devotees showering flowers at the feet of the goddess.
Recite the Middle Charita (chapters 2-4) of Durga Saptashati — the slaying of Mahishasura. If time is short, recite Chapter 2 and the Argala Stotra.
The most sacred ritual of Durga Puja — performed in the 24-minute transition between Ashtami and Navami tithi. 108 diyas and 108 lotus flowers are offered to the goddess in her Chamunda form. This is when Durga slew Chanda and Munda.
Offer khichuri, labra (mixed vegetables), chutney, and payesh as bhog. Perform the arati with dhunuchi (clay incense burner) dance — the classical Durga Puja aarti. Sing 'Jai Ambe Gauri' or 'Durga Durgatinashini'.
Distribute the bhog as prasad to all devotees. Ashtami prasad is considered especially powerful. Break the fast (if observed) only after offering and consuming the prasad.
This guide reflects classical Parashari tradition. Regional variations exist — consult a family priest for specifics.
