Celebrated the day after Janmashtami, reenacting young Krishna's playful theft of butter and curd from pots hung high. Teams (Govindas) form human pyramids to break an earthen pot (handi) filled with curd hung several stories high, amid cheers and music.
Dedicated to Lord Krishna (Bal Gopal)
Observe a day-long fast (nirahara or phalahara). Do not eat grains or heavy foods. The fast breaks at midnight after the Janma Utsav.
Bathe in the evening and wear clean clothes (preferably yellow). Decorate the puja area with flowers, peacock feathers, and the jhula. Place the Bal Krishna idol on the jhula with the yellow peetambar.
Sit before the jhula with water and flowers in your hand. Take Sankalp to perform the Janmashtami Vrat and Krishna Janma Utsav through the night until Nishita Kaal.
Invoke Lord Ganesha first with durva, flowers, and laddoo.
At Nishita Kaal (midnight), perform the symbolic birth of Bal Krishna. Bathe the idol with panchamrit — first milk, then curd, ghee, honey, sugar — then wash with Gangajal. Wipe dry. This is the Abhishek of the newborn Krishna.
Dress the idol in fresh yellow peetambar with ornaments and a peacock feather crown. Perform the sixteen upacharas — Asana, Padya, Arghya, Achamaniya, Vastra, Gandha (chandan), Akshat, Pushpa (tulsi is essential), Dhupa, Deepa, Naivedya (makhan-mishri, kheer, panjiri), Tambula, Pradakshina, Namaskar.
Recite the Krishna Ashtakam, Govinda Ashtakam, or selected verses from the Bhagavata Purana's tenth canto (Dashama Skanda) describing Krishna's birth and childhood. Chant 'Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare' as Mahamantra japa.
Gently rock the Bal Krishna idol in the jhula while singing devotional lullabies (Jhulan Geet). 'Nand Ke Anand Bhayo, Jai Kanhaiya Lal Ki' is the traditional birth celebration song.
Perform the Krishna Aarti with camphor — singing 'Aarti Kunj Bihari Ki'. Ring the bell throughout. Let every devotee take the camphor flame for blessings.
Distribute the naivedya — makhan-mishri, panjiri, pedha, kheer — as prasad. Everyone breaks the fast together after consuming the prasad. Krishna Janma is celebrated with joy — dance, music, and sharing sweets.
This guide reflects classical Parashari tradition. Regional variations exist — consult a family priest for specifics.
