शैलपुत्री
Navdurga
Shailaputri is the first of the nine forms of Durga worshipped on Day 1 of Navratri. Her name means 'daughter of the mountain' (Shaila = mountain, putri = daughter) — she is the reincarnation of Sati as the daughter of Himavan. She rules the Muladhara chakra and grounds the sadhaka for the nine-day spiritual journey. Day 1 of Navratri is associated with the colour red (or white in some traditions). Devotees offer ghee and pray for health and strength. Her worship establishes the foundational energy for the nine-night practice.
Seated on a bull (Nandi), two arms holding a trident in her right hand and a lotus in her left. A crescent moon on her forehead. Dressed in red.
